Giraud, recteur d'Saint Saûveux en Dgèrnésy, fit eune vèrsion Française "Ouvre tes portes, O Sion" tchi fut publiée dans "Hymnes à l'usage de l'église pour le service divin" d'la Société pour l'Avancement des Connaissances Chrétiennes:

Rev. J. Giraud, rector of Saint Saviour, Guernsey, contributed hymn translations to the SPCK's "Hymnes à l'usage de l'église pour le service divin". Here's a Jèrriais adaptation of Giraud's "Ouvre tes portes, O Sion" which was his French translation of Ed­ward Cas­wall's "O Zion, open wide thy gates" which was an English translation of Jean-Baptiste de Santeüil's Latin hymn "Temp­li sac­ra­tas pan­de, Si­on, for­es":

1923: Peirson Day

The Evening Post reported the 1923 commemoration of the Battle of Jersey:

...That from the Jersey Boy Scouts bore the following inscription, which in pre-war days was placed on the wreaths then sent by the lineal descendant of Peirson, now deceased, and also on the wreath placed on the tomb by Mr. Ed. Gavey:

To the undying memory of Major Francis Peirson and his brave companions who laid down their lives on Jan. 6, 1781, in defending

et ch't' anichette nos êtchait d'l'Âge dé Fé,

un magl'ye dé bein au liain au jour d'aniet.

Coumme dans la tombe au rouai Toutankhamonne,
nou-s'est à dêch'ler des richesses tout l'tou.
"Véthe, dé tchi mangnifique!" - ch'est mots-là r'sonnent.
Y'a deux milles ans nou-s'y fit la migoût.

Si ch'est qu'nou fond du fé, et l'rotchi sangne,

Du Jèrriais siez BBC Radio Jèrri

Here is a list of the phrases we covered in this week's little Jèrriais lesson on BBC Jersey (Monday after 6pm). We revised last week's verbs and added a few more:

• liéthe = to read
• r'liéthe/èrliéthe = to re-read, to read again, to read back
• dêliéthe = to read backwards (to be done with magic books, according to folklore)
• graie = to make, to prepare, to create
• bûchi = to break

iterative aspect:
putting r'/èr as a prefix on any verb in Jèrriais conveys the idea of a repetition of the action.

Ch'est eune pièche historique et pus à co satirique tchi r'présente les sentiments des cheins tchi bliaûmaient l's Allemands pouor la Preunmié Dgèrre Mondiale et tchi d'sithaient la peunnition des responsabl'yes. Il est en fait d'înmaginner un procès d'crînmes dé dgèrre contre un Prussien caricatuthé.
