 La Fête Nouormande returns to Jersey: stories, poetry, music and dance

 

For the first time since 2017, the annual celebration of Norman language returns to Jersey on the weekend of 13th-14th June 2026.

 

La Fête Nouormande, also known as La Fête des Rouaisouns, brings together speakers and enthusiasts of Jèrriais, Guernésiais and mainland varieties of Norman language in a programme of performances, exchanges and activities. The public are invited to attend many of the free events during the weekend, and even try out some traditional dancing.

 

Cancellation of La Fête Nouormande 2020

UNESCO have noted the international effects of the pandemic on intangible cultural heritage which "have shown the scale of disruption across the world, with many significant festive events and rituals cancelled or postponed. Some communities can no longer access the cultural and natural spaces and places of memory necessary for expressing their intangible cultural heritage, while others are restricted from coming together to share and enjoy many aspects of their intangible cultural heritage, so important to them."

Speakers of Jèrriais, Guernésiais, and other varieties of Norman have also been restricted from coming together for the annual celebration of the Norman language - La Fête Nouormande - and Jersey's hosting of the festival in June 2020 (programmed 7-14 June) has unfortunately had to be cancelled.

Other language events in other countries have also had to put this year's plans on hold, and to reschedule proposed hosts for future years. For example, the Royal National Mod, the Gaelic gathering in Scotland, has had to be rescheduled; the Welsh National Eisteddfod has had to be postponed for a year; the Inter-Celtic festival in Lorient is also suspended this year.

In the circumstances, travel is impossible, contact (for traditional dancing and customs) inadvisable, and audiences impractical. Online contact between associations has been maintained and developed through video, and it may be possible to put together a smaller-scale virtual event later this year. However the opportunity for Jersey to host La Fête Nouormande physically in the future is under discussion between associations and the schedule of hosts for the next few years will be decided and communicated in due course.

In the meantime, there are ways to enjoy Norman language and culture from the Islands and Continent online, and this will be further developed as planning for future festivals evolves.

La Fête de la langue normande « Les Rouaisouns »

La Fête de la langue normande « Les Rouaisouns » en est à son 21è anniversaire. (La première a eu lieu à Montebourg en 1998 !) Elle rassemble Jersiais, Guernesiais et des « Normands de la Graund Terre ». La date fixée est le 21 juin au soir, 22 et 23 juin, avec des actions les jours précédents : écoles, résidence autonomie, cafés-bars avec Magène.

Au programme : vendredi : 20 h concours de chanteurs amateurs (avec au moins un refrain en normand), 22 h conteur-chanteur professionnel, Nicolas Dubost.

Samedi : 9 h 30 accueil à la mairie des groupes en costume, 10 h défilé en ville jour du marché. Marché du terroir, camp viking sur 2 jours par l’association Cotentin et Cotte de mailles.

Table ronde à 11 h pour faire le point sur les actions en faveur du normand proposées par la Région Normandie. Présence d'élus.

Repas en ville : grilleurs, restaurants et sous tente. Montebourg est célèbre pour son concours de tripes à la Chandeleur début février !

Après-midi : jeux en extérieur, lectures et chants avec les Jersiais, Guernesiais,… Expositions sur les écrivains, librairie avec éditeurs, stands des associations de normand, inclus Jersey et Guernesey. Jeux de vocabulaire pour débutants et enfants . Thé-brioches du Vast à la pause. Soirée : folklore (Rossel,…), conteurs, groupes musicaux,…

Dimanche : matin visite de la ville, animation par la Ferme des 5 saisons (François Thiébot aussi conteur en normand), Battous du Cotentin, messe à l’église St-Jacques. Aprème : danses folklore normand, concert Magène et Nicolas Dubost, jeux et sports normands.

His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor practised his language skills with a Jèrriais welcome to our mainland Normand and Guernsey guests (unfortunately the arrival from Guernsey was delayed due to problems with the boat).

The Normans invade Jersey!

The Normans invade Jersey!

This year it’s Jersey’s turn to host La Fête Nouormande, the annual Norman language festival, which circulates between us, Guernsey and the Normandy mainland. As a result, visitors will be taking part in a variety of events with a language focus.

The week kicks off on Monday 12th June at 6p.m. in Parade Gardens with a selection of traditional Norman games. Everyone is welcome to come to try out Palet Cible, Tchilles and Doque – and the rules will be explained on arrival!

On Tuesday 13th June we have our regular Tuesday “Jèrriais at the pub” session at the Adelphi in The Parade at 5.30.

There’s another pub visit on Wednesday evening 14th June at 7.30 – this time at The Post Horn. This will include a Jèrriais panel game based on several popular TV games. Come along and have fun with our language – you don’t even need to speak it to participate! You’ll have to buy your own drink though!

La Fête Nouormande 2017

Every year the annual get-together of Norman speakers rotates between the Channel Islands and the Mainland. In 2017 Jersey is hosting again and between 12-18 June, there are plenty of events to interact with or just enjoy Jersey culture and related cultures from our neighbouring Islands and Continent. There will be performers from mainland Normandy, Guernésiais speakers from Guernsey, and Jèrriais speakers from Jersey - with activities, music, dance, poetry, stories and fun. During the week, events are mostly focused on Jèrriais, with our visiting participants providing the bulk of the entertainment for the big weekend.
