J'veins d'faithe un viage dé 1,500 milles en moto, et quand nou-s est tout-seu à cachi un moto si liain nou n'fait qu'penser et r'penser, et tchiquesfais nou pâle à sé-mème! Comme j'pense tréjous en Jèrriais, l'sujet d'mes pensées 'tait Jèrri, les Jèrriais d'man janne temps et d'à ch't heu et la vielle langue Nouormande tch'est l'héthitage d'anciens comme dé jannes, mais tch'est mînse dé côté comme étant sans valeu par un tas d'ches jannes-là tchi n'savent pon mus! Ch't idée-là m'fit penser qu'oulle est en dangi d'sé pèrdre et qué j'dév'thions constituer eune Tutelle pour en prendre souain et au mains adouochi ses vièrs jours jusqu'au moment qu'ou' meuthe dé sa belle mort!

 

Sans doute, eune Tutelle chouaîsis un Tuteur, et v'là tch'i' m'fit mé d'mander "Tch'est tchi s'en va êt' Tuteur?" Pour faithe honneu au moussieu tch'a travailyi l'pus pour prêsèrver la langue dans nouot' temps, i' faut nommer Fraînque Le Maistre, j'pensis. Mais y'a un aut' moussieu tchi m'vînt à l'idée, étout, tchi faudrait mett' sus la Tutelle, et jé s'sais mème d'avis qué nou dév'thait changi la louai dans chu cas-chîn pour nouos pèrmettre dé nommer un tuteur-adjoint, ou tchiqu'aut' titre dé mème, pour lé mett' aussi près du Tuteur qué possibl'ye, car comme fonctionnaithe i' vaut san paids en or! Chu moussieu-là et Maître Philip Mauger de Veulle, tchi fut pour bein d's années jusqu'à ches drein ségrétaithe dé la Sociêté Jèrriaise à Londres. si janmais un homme a travailyi dû et trantchil'ment, sans qu'pèrsonne s'en appèrchéve, pour avanchi la cause dé la prêsèrvation d'la langue Jèrriaise, ch'est ch't'ila! Et il a apporté un saver-faithe et eune întelligence à la tâche  tch'est r'mèrquabl'ye. J'tais acouo en Jèrri l'êté passé quand l's arrangements 'taient en allant pour l'împrînm'thie du dictionnaithe tch'est l'chef-d'oeuvre dé Fraînque Le Maistre, et j'vouos asseûthe qué l'Sieur de Veulle sé dêrangit et travaillit niet et jour pour trouver l'miyeu mouyain d'l'aver împrînmé comme i' faut et publyiyé en 1966.

Ichîn, au bieau solé, nou-s a d'la peine à craithe tch'i' y'a du mauvais temps dans l'monde! Dans la ville dé Fort Lauderdale - eune ville dé 150,000 habitants - 25 milles au nord dé Miami, i' pathaît tch'il y veint trais millions d'touristes dans l'hiver pour prendre avantage du bieau temps. La grand' partie des gens tchi d'meuthent dans l's Êtats du Nord (où-est tch'i' fait fraid comme au Canada) et tchi peuvent y'affaurder, veulent y passer un mais, ou pus pour raccourchi l'mauvais hiver siez-ieux. En passant dans la ville ch't arlévée, j'viyais un sîngne tchi disait qu'la tempéthatuthe 'tait 84 dégrés. Étant si près d'la mé, y'a tréjous eune brise dé vent tch'aîgue à supporter la chaleu, et ch'tait eune tempéthatuthe confortabl'ye. La grève lé long d'la ville a siex milles dé long, et l'sablion est quâsi blianc comme la né. Nou peut s'y bangnier confortabl'yément touos les jours dé l'année. Pour les cheins tch'aiment aller à la pêque, y'a tout pliein d'gros paîssons à prendre, mais i' faut aller en mé. I' n'y a pon d'mathée pour dithe, et i' n'y a pon telle chose comme d'aller à basse-ieau comme en Jèrri!

L'încèrtitude d'au jour d'aniet est la poste. J'avais quâsi pèrdu espéthance dé janmais r'chéver des gâzettes dé Jèrri, mais à ma grand' surprînse - et grand pliaîsi en mème temps - j'en ai r'chu quatre chutte sémaine, trais l'même jour et la quatrième deux jours pus tard. La dreine èrchue est la cheinne du sept dé novembre, ch'est en tchi ou viyiz qu'les nouvelles dé Jèrri sont siex s'maines en r'tard. Mais i' n'en sont pon les mains beinv'nues, car ouaithe qué jé n'sis pon malheutheux en Améthique, mes pensées sont l'pus souvent en Jèrri.

 

Eune chose qué les gâzettes dé Jèrri m'annoncent est la même chose ichîn étout - la renchiéthe des vivres et d's habits et d'toutes sorte d'marchandises continnue. J'vai qué l'lait est deux ch'lîns la pînte à ch't heu dans l'Île. Sans doute lé prix dé dgiex pénîns n'pathaît pon tèrribl'ye quand nou l'vait par êcrit, mais ch'est quand même deux ch'lIns! Et avouo j'comprends qué l'pouorre fèrmyi n'peut pon faithe dé profit sus l'l'ait d'ses vaques. Où'est tch'est lé r'miède? Sans doute Moussieu Percy L'Masuthi nouos en donne eune idée quand i' nouos dit qu'les boulets qué nou donne ès vaques a r'doubliée d'prix - dé quarante-chîn louis l'tonné à nénante - et qu'l'engrais a r'doublié étout - dé trente-chîn louis à septante. Ch'est seux qué l'fret d'transport dé l'engrais et des boulets d'Angliétèrre en Jèrri a ieu hardi à faithe dans la renchiéthe, et ch'éthait 'té un bouan sujet à distchuter auve lé Ségrétaithe Général du Sŷndicat d'Transport, quand il 'tait en Jèrri vèrs la fîn d'octobre, mais à la pliaiche dé l'apostrophier au sujet, j'vai qué L's Êtats donnîdrent un dîner à s'n honneu à l'Hôtel l'Horizon! Nouos anciens éthaient bein vite dit qué "Nouos couochons n'veulent pus d'chours" si d'ité avait ieu lieu dans lus temps!

As the Island's flora changed, so would the Jèrriais languagage to absorb the new species

Some interesting comments on new names for plants in Jèrriais, edited from "A Natural History of Jersey" (Le Sueur, 1976):

The argument is often put forward that if a species has a [Jèrriais] name then it must be an old-established resident of the Island with its roots metaphorically away back in time. I have never been able to agree with this as it involves the tacit assumption that [Jèrriais] has always been a dying, or at least a static, language. Until this century that was not true and as the Island's flora changed, so would the [Jèrriais] languagage to absorb the new species. There were three possible courses: a new name could be invented, some foreign name could be literally translated into [Jèrriais], or if the new species was vaguely like one already here, the name of this could be used to cover both. If the words chosen were 'good' [Jèrriais] then the history of the plant would be obscured. For instance, the actual words of mèrgot ès pouochîns et êtchelles dé Jâcob cannot be faulted philologically, yet we know from the history of these species outside the Island that they cannot have been here long. Mèrgot ès pouochîns, the small pinky-white daisy-like flower which grows in such profusion on granite walls that it looks like a native species, comes from Mexico, as its English name Mexican fleabane implies, and was probably introduced into Jersey late in the 19th century. But êtchelles dé Jâcob when applied to the now common montbretia Crocosmis x crocosmiflora is an even better example. Its flower was seen in 1880 for the first time by anyone anywhere only after a Frenchman, Victor Lemoine, had 'made' the species by crossing its two South African parents in his garden at Nancy. In view of this a [Jèrriais] name cannot be held to imply long residence here.
