Discours par Dr Mari Jones

On Friday 7th April at 1.10p.m., Dr Mari Jones of the University of Cambridge will present a lunchtime talk in the Jersey Library's Friday series.

"Why should we bother about Jèrriais?"

She explains: "This talk is aimed at a general audience – and is accessible to all, regardless of whether or not you speak Jèrriais. 

I will begin by explaining what led me, a Welsh-speaker from the Valleys of South Wales, to become interested in Norman, and why I have chosen to devote a large part of my academic career at the University of Cambridge to studying the Norman French of the Channel Islands. 

I will consider reasons why I believe that learning Jèrriais is important and describe how speaking Jèrriais can benefit Jersey’s younger generation. The talk will also explore how speaking Norman French can help us to learn more about the history of English  and how Jèrriais could have a valuable role in developing cultural links between Jersey and the Norman mainland."

Język sercquiais

Język sercquiais

Używany na Sark, jednej z Wysp Normandzkich. Należy do języków romańskich, pochodzi z używanego na sąsiedniej wyspie Jersey języka jèrriais i bardzo przypomina normandzki, przez co niekiedy bywa uznawany tylko za dialekt. Posługują się nim tylko nieliczni mieszkańcy wyspy Sark, a i oni powoli rezygnują z niego na rzecz angielskiego. W samym sercquiais obecnych jest wiele anglicyzmów. Praktycznie nie stosuje się go w piśmie i edukacji. Pierwszym i jednym z niewielu zachowanych tekstów w tym języku jest XIX-wieczne tłumaczenie biblijnej przypowieści o siewcy. Według badań z 2014 r. sercquiais posługuje się 20 osób, ale wyłącznie w mowie.

Aubèrge et café - Pub and café

Les cliâsses ès êcoles ont finni pouor chu tèrme, mais les rêunnions à l'aubèrge (Adelphi: Mardi 5h30-6h30 du sé) et au café (Costa Coffee dans Les Ruettes, Jeudi 10h30-11h30) continnuent châque sémaine coumme d'amors.

School classes have finished for this term, but pub (at the Adelphi in the Parade) and café (at Costa Coffee in Bath Street) weekly sessions carry on regardless of school holidays.

"After a successful crowdfunder campaign for our new album, and months of hard work recording and mixing, in the end we were denied permission to release one of the songs - a bilingual cover version of The Beatles 'With a Little Help From My Friends'. Sony ATV didn't give a reason - but we have to respect the decision. We had chosen this song in particular to record with Les Amis Choir (a special choir formed of a group of adults with learning disabilities, who are supported by the Jersey charity Les Amis) so of course we were all heartbroken."

Nou vait au R'nouvé un Êden d'amain,
