Following up on the previous post on the correct form of address for a man or gentleman, here's part of an article by Caouain (hence the owl picture) published in Les Chroniques de Jersey 22/1/1921:

Nou rencontre souvent des gens ichin en Jerri qui s'saient hardi offensés si nous avait l'malheur, en l's adressant, de se servi d'la commune expression "Mess," et qui vos dithaient tout-d'suite. "J'ai l'titre d'Moussieu, mé!"

Jamais i' n'a 'té cliaithement dêmontré tchi difféthence qu'i' y a entre "Mess" et "Moussieu" mais tout-d'mème l'idée populaithe est qu'un individu qu'nous appelle "Moussieu" est biaucoup pus supérieur et digne de respé qu'un autre qu'est tout simpliément "Mess."

Nou m'a tchiquefais dit qu'il existe une règlye qu'un homme a l'drouait de s'faithe appeler "Moussieu," si ch'est qu'san pèthe éthait Moussieu d'vant li, sus l'principe, je suppose, de "tel pèthe, tel fils."

Pour les siens qui n'ont pas ieu l'bonheur d'héthither l'titre, et qui voudraient l'attachi à lus nom, il est raique nécessaithe d'otchuper la poste d'Connaîtablye, de Député, ou bain d'aver té Offici dans la Milice, et nous obtchient d'un seul coup un patronymique "pour lui et ses hoirs" et pour sa postérité à jamais.

Mais dame! i' y a "Messieux" et "Messieux."

This evening's meeting of la Section de la langue Jèrriaise has been called off, due to the snow. Members are instead planning to have a get-together after next week's carol singing in Town.

The Department has announced school closures at 12.30pm due to snow. Jèrriais classes are cancelled today.

The National Trust for Jersey’s restoration of 16 New Street is getting a festive boost from sales of the Liberation Brewery’s Christmas Ale. For the second year running the Channel Island’s very own seasonal tipple features a classic local ingredient, Jersey black butter made by the National Trust at a three-day-long community event at The Elms in October. In return, the brewery’s owner, the islands’ largest pub and drinks company, the Liberation Group, will donate 10p from every pint of the Liberation Christmas Ale sold during its limited run. The money raised will pay for the specialist lighting of the entrance hall to the historic building. Liberation Christmas Ale will be officially launched at the Fête dé Noué celebrations in the Royal Square on Thursday, 2 December at 6pm, where samples of the beer will be available outside the Cock and Bottle pub.

Hannoukah (ou bein Hanukkah ou Hannoucca, ou coumme ou voulez l'êcrithe - pouor achteu jé n'avons pon chu nom dans l'dictionnaithe) est eune fête Juive tchi s'adonne dans les pathages dé Noué. Vraînment, ch'n'est pon eune grande fête dans l'Judaïsme, coumme la Pâque Juive, mais ch'est eune fête populaithe, sustout ès Êtats Unnis, où'est qu'les fêtes des Actions d'Grâces, dé Noué, d'Hannoukah, et du Nouvel An vos tchaient sus l'co dans un grand galînmatchias dé dgaîté d'la fîn du mais d'Novembre jusqu'au c'menchement du mais d'Janvyi.

Hannoukah est la fête des leunmiéthes tchi ramémouaithe l'èrconsécrâtion du templ'ye et l'mithacl'ye des veues tch'enduthaient en d'pit du p'tit d'hielle tchi restait.

Dé couôteunme nou mange des crêpes à patate. Bouan Hannoukah!
