La vol'lie d's avions a 'té disteurbée en Jèrri aniet à cause d'eune montangne brûlante en Islande. Né v'chîn eune description d'un volcan par George d'La Forge:

I' m'fait penser à un gros bouanhomme assis dans la mé à feunmer sa pipe et êcopi du feu! Longtemps d'vant arriver auprès du volcan, nou vait comme si ch'tait deux rouoges ribans suspendus dans l'ciel, et couronnés d'eune fliambe dé feu êcliatant et tourbillonnant d'temps en temps. À m'suthe qué not' navithe appréchait du volcan nou viyait bein que chein tchi pathaissait comme des ribans d'feu 'taient des p'tites riviéthes dé lave tchi d'vallaient sans arrêt d'la goule du volcan jusqu'à la mé! V'là tchi valait la peine dé vaie, man bouanhomme! Justément comme lé feu pathaissait bein assis dans l'cratère il sembliait qu'eune agence învisibl'ye y tchulbutait eune grand' pal'tée d'tchèrbon tchi l'faisait fliamber tchiques chents pids en l'air - et pis la fliambe dispathaissait dans la niet, et l'feu èrquémenchait à pétilyi trantchil'ment!

Dans la vielle boutique à CT Maine, la bijout'tie dans la Rue d'Driéthe à Saint Hélyi, y'a achteu eune mouontréthie dé littéthatuthe en Jèrriais. Y'a des textes entouor la bijout'tie, et tchiques portraits d'vielles annonches en Jèrriais.

Pais au fou et bîngo

Eune séthée d'pais au fou et bîngo à Saint Martîn, l'9 d'Avri. Eune bordée d'fanne!

An evening of bean crock and bingo was held on Friday at Saint Martin. Bingo numbers were, as usual, called in Jèrriais and English. Fun was had by all.

The Isle

Des tristes nouvelles - j'avons ouï qu'Percy L'Masuthi n'est pus. Percy, tchi d'meuthait à La Pointe, Vînch'lez, pâlait du raide bouôn Jèrriais d'Saint Ouën.

À la rêunion annuel dé l'Assemblié d'Jèrriais y'a deux'trais ans, Percy nos racontit coumme tchi qu'i' 'tait entchethiné pouôr l'sport dans sa jannèche, et coumment qu'i' 'tait dans l's Êtats d'Jèrri - i' s'èrtithit coumme Député en 1996.

I' nos aidgit dans les clâsses du Jèrriais étout - jusqu'à 2005 i' fit des léçons à l'êcole dé Sainte Mathie.

Percy trépâssit l' dînmanche d'Pacques (4 d'avri) 2010 - nos condolèances à sa fanmil'ye. À bétôt, man vyi.

Some sad news - we have heard today that Percy Le Masurier is no longer with us. Percy, who lived at La Pointe at Vinchelez, spoke the good St. Ouen variety of Jèrriais.

Speaking at the AGM of L'Assembliée d'Jèrriais a couple of years ago, he told us how keen he had been on sport in his younger days, and what it was like in the States - he retired as Deputy in 1996.

He helped us with the Jèrriais teaching programme too - until 2005 he taught Jèrriais at St. Mary's School for us.

Percy died on Easter Sunday (4th April) 2010 - we send our sympathies to his family. Farewell, old friend.

Les Fieillets Jèrriais Avri 2010

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday April 7th at 8.00pm in the Arthur Mourant Room at La Société Jersiaise for further information, literature work and composition drafting.

We have been extremely fortunate to have received a large collection of original poetry and prose donated by Laurie Huelin. The pieces, including short plays, were written for competition in Les Sethées Jèrriaises at the Eisteddfodau since about 1950. They are a wonderful example of the wealth of literature, humour and imagination that the Jersey authors possessed and were able to express in Jèrriais.

At our meetings during the next few months, we will involve reading, classifying and selecting examples with a view to publishing them as a record of what brought laughter and applause to appreciative listeners.

"Tu dait savé qu'nou n'mange autchune sorte de viande le Vendredi Saint. Ch'est du paisson qu'nou mange, épis des fiottes. Il éthait fallu pâslé à ma méthe d'avé sûs la tablye autchune autre chose chu jour-là. Man pèthe, l'y, n'tait pas si partitchulyi, et j'l'entendit une bordée dithe à yun d'ses vaisins qu'un bouon gigot d'mouton y'éthait fait pûs d'bein, mais y n'éthait pas ôsé l'dithe en d'vant d'mémée. Avec chonna, y faut admettre que les temps sont changis, et le brit couort qu'y'a un p'tit viaud pas lien d'ichin tch'est pour fini sa courte vie dans l'mitan d'la s'maine, sans qu'personne en sache rain."

La Journée des Coues

April Fool's Day = La Journée des Coues. A coue is a tail, and the custom used to be to pin paper tails to people's clothes behind their backs as eune farce.

An April Fool is also un paîsson d'Avri (literally, an April fish).
