La Section de la Langue Jèrriaise Spring Newsletter. 2016.

During the Spring and Summer meetings we shall continue to learn our language. At our initial Section meeting on Wed. 6th. January, the following activities were proposed for these future meetings, on the first Wednesday of each month.

It was thought that each meeting could consist of 2 or 3 parts, during which we would do different activities from the following list, both to learn the language in different ways and to give more variety to the learning sessions.
Each activity would also be accompanied by conversation from the various texts. We will continue to finish translating and formally recording the story of the ‘Dragon’ by Geraint in order to introduce us to various verb tenses and vocabulary; to write short stories to extend our use of tenses and vocabulary and to record anecdotes of Members’ experiences....for publication, and to complete relevant exercises from Jèrrais Pour Tous (Birt) to complement the above.
In addition, we shall play various games to improve our vocabulary and go on visits during the summer, using Jèrriais vocabulary. These will be selected from; a beach (eune grève), in Town (en Ville), Samarès Manor (Lé Mangni d’Sanmathè), the Steam Museum (Lé Musée à Suage) et La Hougue Bie.

Other projects we hope to include are the investigation into the States’ delay in ratifying the European Charter section on Minority Languages and the compilation and requesting that the Jèrriais names for fish be included on the appropriate European Maritime Fisheries Map.

Lastly, we have a request for volunteers via this Newsletter, to help us to type a page, or part thereof, from the archive scripts of the Pièches d’Théatre donated by Eileen Le Sueur, This is a collection full of humour and an ideal way for us to learn new expressions in the language.
Finally, there is also an invitation to join the conversation meetings on Tuesday evenings, 5.30 - 6.30 pm at the Adelphi (on the Parade), and/or at Costa Coffee, Thursday mornings, 10.30 - 11.30 am in Bath Street at reserved Jèrriais tables. Notice of the meetings will be posted on the SJ website and on Twitter.

Ralph Nichols (Ségrétaithe).
