When asked to draw a picture of a flower that does not exist, monolingual children were fairly unadventurous, drawing perhaps a flower that was missing its leaves, or a flower with only one petal. Bilingual children, on the other hand, incorporated elements from completely different objects—producing for instance, a flower with a tail, or a flower with teeth. This kind of cross-category mixing in children’s drawings tends not to occur until kids are about eight years old, putting the bilingual kids on an accelerated timeline for this particular skill.

The claim that a language which requires support is a language that is beyond saving is one which is often made but rarely critically examined. The argument fails to take into account the support which 'national' languages like English receive at the taxpayers' expense through broadcasting, education and the various institutions of the state. It is precisely because Scots does not and did not receive these indirect forms of support that it is being lost at such speed. To stand by and sneer while this cultural catastrophe continues is not in my view a reasonable response.

The Cornish language Saturday school was shown on ITV’s West Country News before Christmas, because students from Cornwall College in Redruth have been working with Movyans Skolyow Meythrin to produce a CD and accompanying booklet of Cornish language songs for preschool age children and their families.

Lé Juré-Justicier Falle qui parle également en anglais, dit qu'il n'est pas de conséquence quelle langue parler, du moment que le coeur y est. Ainsi, il importait peu du langage si on aime la Reine et le gouvernement. (Hear! hear!)...

At a time when UNESCO deems 43% of the world's 6,000 languages at risk of extinction, the imperative to record and analyse these linguistic varieties while they are still spoken has scarcely been greater. Yet researchers have ostensibly been slow to avail themselves of the opportunities offered by new techologies, from visual and aural archiving, to digitisation of textual resources and electronic mapping, techniques which could have the potential to play an integral role in reversing language shift. However, it is clear that with these new technologies come new challenges for the linguist. The Second Cambridge Language Endangerment Conference invites researchers to bring forward their ideas for tackling these issues: to share experiences from the field, to consider how these new resources might best be applied, as well as the problems that they can bring, to reassess more traditional techniques in light of new technologies and to work with a view towards achieving a practicable synthesis of old and new methodologies.

It’s the beginning of the year and we’re wondering what it will bring us, however, there is one thing that we know: that is that we’ll have to wait and see.
This chapter offers a discussion on the interconnection between Jèrriais and song (more specifically folksong using Jèrriais). It shows that song can act as a powerful medium in language revitalization, and that as an island Jersey has much to offer in terms of showing how language and song provide a means of celebrating and creating island culture.

En novembre 2011 la coordination DPLO (Défense et Promotion des Langues d'Oïl) se réunissait en assemblée générale en Wallonie picarde, à la Maison de la Culture de Tournai en Belgique. Son assemblée générale était l'occasion pour DPLO de faire le bilan de son activité et du combat que la coordination mène depuis 30 ans pour faire reconnaître les langues d'oïl:

Browsing some articles written with very distinctive Saint Ouënnais dialectal features, we decided to make a little list. The dictionaries don't cite all these forms with a ð, and the liaisons in ð don't seem to be well described (note also the general lengthening of the vowel before ð). The image above is a "family tree" of the 1000 languages I've found to date, where proximity in the tree is measured by a straightforward statistical comparison of writing systems...
I'm using these data in collaboration with language groups all around the world to develop basic resources that help people use their language online: keyboard input methods, spell checkers, online dictionaries, and so on. This work also underlies the Indigenous Tweets and Indigenous Blogs projects, which aim to strengthen languages through social media.

Contemporary poets often give readings nationally and abroad and have attracted followers to the cause of Zapotec culture with their mesmerizing verses. Natalia Toledo (b. 1967), a poet who also designs clothing and jewelry, has traveled the world to read poetry in her native tongue. She commented that when she reads her verses in Vietnam, Italy, or the United States people are enchanted, even if they don't understand the words. It is the sound itself that entrances.
