Norman language - official recognition and promotion

On Saturday 19th January the mainland Normandy Region organised a meeting of officials, politicians, activists, academics and other interested parties with round table discussions on the future of the Norman language. Deputy Le Tocq from Guernsey took part, but unfortunately attendance by Deputy Tadier, Assistant Minister for Culture representing the States of Jersey, and Geraint Jennings, of L'Office du Jèrriais, was prevented by the cancellation of ferries.

A lively discussion was had and the event was summed up by M. Hervé Morin, President of the Normandy Region, who launched a programme for the safeguard and promotion of the Norman language. Among measures to be undertaken are:

• a survey of usage of the language
• a linguistic audio atlas
• the creation of an academy of the Norman language
• Norman language classes in schools
• signage in Norman

Y'avait eune fais un pouôrre pêtcheux dé tchi la bouonnefemme 'tait eune picangn'rêsse. Un jour la bouonnefemme lî dit qu'viyant qu'i' n'y'avait rein à mangi siez ieux et qu'ou n'voulait pon mouothi d'faim et d'tchi acouo qu'ou r'grettait bein d's'êt' mathiée à li, i' dévthait rapporter eune bouonne pêque ou autrément y'éthait du hèrtchîn.

Lé pêtcheux don s'en fut à la pêque dans san p'tit baté et c'menchit à pêtchi. Mais i' n'attrapit rein. I' drannetit et r'drannetit mais n'y'eut pon d'hale. Auprès d's heuthes i' 'tait pouor èrlâchi mais, en pensant à sa bouonnefemme grégeaise, il êprouvit eune dreine fais. Et quand i' halit san drannet, il y trouvit un p'tit pourpre paîsson. "Au mains j'éthons eune bouochie à chârer aniet," qu'lé pêtcheux dit.

Fut-i' ravi quand l'paîsson lî pâlit! "Né m'tuez pon, Moussieu l'pêtcheux, s'i' vos pliaît! J'sis un paîsson du scîn, un tchéthaûd d'la mé. Et s'ou m'lâtchiz, jé f'thai un tou pouor qué pouor l'restant d'la journée tout chein qu'ou souhait'tez par lé pouver du p'tit pourpre paîsson s'sa grée dêliêment!"
