As usual, the Saint Helier annual Pilgrimage took place yesterday. There was a moment of Jèrriais during the service, so many people wanting to get into the Hermitage that a queue had to be marshalled, and plenty of sunshine. A marquee on the Castle lawn provided refreshments both physical and musical: Badlabecques put a spring in the pilgrims' steps with some Jèrriais songs.

Here again this year is the competition organised by Natural England and The Guardian to find vernacular names for lesser-known species. Since we have our own worthy vernacular, we've had some fun thinking up Jèrriais names for the creatures in question (as we did last year). Comments and alternatives welcome!

Ladies and gentlemen, I thought that I should start by using a language that is not normally heard in England!

I am here to tell you something about Jèrriais and how we are working with the technology at our disposal to keep it alive.

Firstly I should declare that I am a practitioner in the maintenance of one specific language which is severely endangered, rather than an academic. I'd like to thank Mari for encouraging me to present a paper and for saying that I probably wouldn't be eaten by this audience! I hope that what I have to offer in this short presentation may give you some insights that will be useful.

I've already mentioned the name of the language, Jèrriais, but I had better locate it on the map.

Salutâtions tout l’monde. Tchi temps acouo eune fais! Thank you to all those who attended last month’s meeting. Things are progressing slowly forward.

This month there are various events but the main one for us is the West Show. Colin Ireson et al at L’Office du Jèrriais would like some help running the Jèrriais stall this coming weekend. Names and times you can offer are needed so he can get Parking Permits. We also need to take some Preunmié Mille Mots for sale.

The SJ also has a stand/stall and maybe we could place some books there as well.

Later in the month there is the Festival of British Archaeology and members could join any of the Section’s visits and maybe add some Jèrriais to the scenes.
