George F. Le Feuvre took on the issue of Les Mielles in 1977:

Les Mielles
Man Doue d'la vie! Tchi train entouôrre Les Mielles, qué l's Angliais appellent La Baie d'St.

The concluding part of the article:

There was a post-War project to build up Saint Ouen's Bay with urban development. Edward Le Brocq's two Saint Ouennais characters were opposed, as shown in the first part of an article from March 1954:

La Saint Dunstan - Saint Dunstan's Day

Aniet, ch'est la Saint Dunstan. Connaîss'-ous la légende dé chu saint?

Today is the feast day of Saint Dunstan. Do you know the legend connected with this saint?

Documentary to be made of Jèrriais band

Channel Television rapporte:

(...) Kit Ashton, lead singer and founder of Badlabecques said: “I’m really pleased someone like Manuela would come all the way over to make a film about us and about Jèrriais. Hopefully it will show that the appeal of Badlabecques is more than just novelty or nostalgia but contributing to a sense of true Jersey cultural identity. (...)

"I decided to come to Jersey and make a film about music, about Jèrriais..."

Manuela, an ethnomusicology student from Colombia, is busy filming and recording and interviewing (you can see her with camera and headphones in a picture in the previous post). We turned the tables on her by getting her on video to explain her interest in Jèrriais.

Au café à matîn - In the coffeeshop this morning

If you feel like dropping in between 10.30am and 11.30am on Thursdays to the Costa Coffee branch in Bath Street, Saint Helier, you can hear Jèrriais spoken. And this morning lots of laughter was heard.

Will music preserve Jèrriais?

Bailiwick Express rapporte:
Jersey's Jèrriais-singing pop-folk band are the subject of a new film being made in the Island.

The documentary about the Badlabecques is being made by Goldsmiths University student Manuela Carrillo - an ethnomusicologist - who is studying how music can safeguard language and cultural heritage. She's aiming to find out whether the band are really helping to keep Jersey's old language alive.

Miss Carrillo comes from Bogota, Colombia and is following the band around the Island as they prepare to record their next album.

When Botch Meant the Opposite of Botch

Slate dêrengl'ye: "When Botch Meant the Opposite of Botch"
How botch became the mot juste for a royal screwup, however, is curious, since "to botch" did not originally mean "to mess up." In fact, it meant the opposite. The word's earliest known citation, with the spelling bocchyn, is in a 14th century translation of the Old Testament's Second Chronicles, which gives an account of the reign of Josiah, who collected money to refurbish the Temple of Solomon.
En Jèrriais, j'avons boûtchîn (ou boûtchage)

Quand nou d'veint vièrs nou n'a qu'ahans!" m'disait un vièr anmîn l'aut' sanm'di dans L'Vièr Marchi en ville.

"Bon!", j'lî dis, "en as-tu, d's ahans? J'n'en ai pon, mé, et j'sis pus vyi qu'té."

"Eh bein," i' m'dit, "tu'as tréjous 'té chanceux, té.

- In seven hours!

Eune articl'ye dé George d'La Forge dé 1966:
A 1966 article by George F. Le Feuvre:

Eune êtudgiante d'l'Allemangne - A student from Germany

"I am Swantje, a student from Germany, and I am studying romance linguistics in Frankfurt. Last year in the summer, I spent four weeks here in Jersey and got to know the indigenous language of the island – but unfortunately, not as much as I would have liked. That's why I got curious about it, as I already had studied other Romance (minority) varieties, as for example Catalan or French in North America. So I decided to write my Master's thesis about the linguistic dynamic in the island. During the two weeks here, I got to know lots of nice people who are making a great effort to maintain Jèrriais and to bring it back into wider use. I think it is a very interesting language which is worth having a look at and maybe even learning it. I really hope that the future of Jèrriais will be positive. Thank you very much for having me!"

Tchestchions sans dgèrnissement au Chef Minnistre, lé Sénateu Ian Gorst

Tchestchion:
Lé Chef Minnistre, crai-t-i' qu'nou pouôrrait faithe pus pouor la promotion du Jèrriais?

Chef Minnistre:

Patois used to 'Bamboozle' enemy

Channel Television rapporte:
Channel Islanders found a way to talk openly during the Occupation, even when the enemy were right there.

While in St Peter Port and St Helier patois might have needed a revival, out in the rural parishes, Guernesiais and Jerriais were spoken frequently.

It came as quite a surprise to the occupying soldiers, who know nothing of the language before setting foot in the islands.

Tony Scott-Warren, L'Office du Jèrriais said: “It was a great way to bamboozle the Germans. They didn't understand it, there were the odd exception that we're aware of, but Jerriais and Guernesiais were used in order to say things that they didn't want the Germans to understand.”

Un but d'la Bibl'ye - Bible snippet

La Bouonne Nouvelle s'lon Luc, Chapitre 5, vèrsets 1-11:
The miraculous draught of fishes, from the Gospel according to Luke:

1985: Occupation Address by Canon Kenneth Preston

"Mercie bein des fais de nous ave invite a chutte celebration": I hope that has said something similar in good Jersey Norman French, the Jersey language.

Bouonne Libéthâtion! - Happy Liberation Day!

Y'a un coin d'tèrre qué j'aime, qué j'n'oubliéthai janmais -
Dans mes pensées tréjous preunmyi -
Car jé n'vai rein à compather à ses bieautés
Dans touos mes viages à l'êtrangi.
Jèrri, man paradis, pus belle taque souos l'solé -
Qué j'aime la paix dé chu Jèrri!
L'amour lé veurt, j'ai si envie dé m'en r'aller
Èrvaie man chièr pétit pays.

Man bieau p'tit Jèrri, la reine des îles -
Lieu dé ma naissance, tu m'pâsses bein près du tchoeu;

Èrvaie ma chiéthe et man siez-mé.

Man bieau p'tit Jèrri, la reine des îles -
Lieu dé ma naissance, tu m'pâsses bein près du tchoeu;

Something briny and Biblical from the Gospel according to Luke.
I' s'adonnit qu'un jour il embèrtchit dans un baté acanté ses discipl'yes et i' lus dit, "Allons, crouaîsons à l'aut' bord d'chutte mathe." Et i' mîndrent à la vaile et quandi qu'i' vailaient i' s'endormit.

"Et bein, man garçon," j'lî rêponnit: "J'me sis d'mandé chutte tchestion-là mé-mème bein des fais. J'crais pas qu'Papa l'savait li-mème, - du mains i' n'nouos l'à jamais dit.

Naûfragis! - Shipwrecked! (3)

L'adgèvement d'l'histouaithe:
The conclusion of the story:

- Shipwrecked! (2)

L'histouaithe continnue:
The story continues:

(siette)

Ch'tait un feu d'bouais, i' pathaît tch'i' n'avaient jamais veu d'tchèrbon.

With the Jersey Boat Show on this weekend, here's the first part of a George F. Le Feuvre tale:

I' taient chinq à bord.

A Year in London: Man Bieau P'tit Jèrri: Jersey is a channel island near France ...
We spend our final evening downtown listening to the band Kit is in, Badlabeques.  They are a band of local musicians that sings in the local language of Jerriais.  Kit is doing a similar masters degree as me (MA in Ethnomusicology), he is trying to revitalize the language in Jersey using music and Ethnomusicology.
