Dêcliève tes grands us, O Sion! - O Zion, open wide thy gates

Rev. J. Giraud, rector of Saint Saviour, Guernsey, contributed hymn translations to the SPCK's "Hymnes à l'usage de l'église pour le service divin". Here's a Jèrriais adaptation of Giraud's "Ouvre tes portes, O Sion" which was his French translation of Edward Caswall's "O Zion, open wide thy gates" which was an English translation of Jean-Baptiste de Santeüil's Latin hymn "Templi sacratas pande, Sion, fores":
Dêcliève tes grands us, O Sion!

Dêcliève tes grands us, O Sion!
L'né est pouor dispathaître.
Né v'chîn la mangnifique unnion
d'la victînme et du prêtre.

N'y'a d'aut' dé brûl'lie sus l'auté;
par san grand sacrifice
lé Fis du Bouôn Dgieu veint d'sarmer
les armes d'la sainte justice.

L'humbl'ye démouaîselle vait dans ch't êfant
la divinnité même;
et deux p'tites colombes coumme présent
oulle offre à Dgieu suprême.

À Siméon pathaît enfîn
l'objet d'san pus long d'si;
Anne, lyi, peut vaie l'êfant divîn
et heutheuse peut mouothi.

La méthe bénie, bein agenouoillie,
l'adouothe sans d'viser mot:
chutte Pathole, chu moussetchot si p'tit,
né pâlant pon acouo.

À té Glouaithe, oh Péthe êtèrnel!
Glouaithe à té, Fis du Péthe!
À té, Saint Esprit, glouaithe au ciel!
Ichîn bas étout - glouaithe!

O Zion, open wide thy gates

O Zion, open wide thy gates,
let figures disappear;
a Priest and Victim, both in one,
the Truth himself, is here.

No more the simple flock shall bleed;
behold, the Father's Son
himself to his own altar comes
for sinners to atone.

Conscious of hidden deity,
the lowly virgin brings
her newborn Babe, with two young doves,
her humble offerings.

The agèd Simeon sees at last
his Lord, so long desired,
and Anna welcomes Israel's hope,
with holy rapture fired.

But silent knelt the mother blest
of the yet silent Word,
and pondering all things in her heart,
with speechless praise adored.

All glory to the Father be,
all glory to the Son,
all glory, holy Ghost, to thee,
while endless ages run.

1923: Peirson Day

The Evening Post reported the 1923 commemoration of the Battle of Jersey:
...That from the Jersey Boy Scouts bore the following inscription, which in pre-war days was placed on the wreaths then sent by the lineal descendant of Peirson, now deceased, and also on the wreath placed on the tomb by Mr. Ed. Gavey:
"Not once or twice in our fair Island's story
The path of duty was the way to glory."
To the undying memory of Major Francis Peirson and his brave companions who laid down their lives on Jan. 6, 1781, in defending
'Not'e chier p'tit pais.'

L'Anichette - The Hoard

Eune poésie entouor l'anichette:
A poem about the Jersey hoard:
L'Anichette

Here is a list of the phrases we covered in this week's little Jèrriais lesson on BBC Jersey (Monday after 6pm). We revised last week's verbs and added a few more:
  • liéthe = to read
  • r'liéthe/èrliéthe = to re-read, to read again, to read back
  • dêliéthe = to read backwards (to be done with magic books, according to folklore)
  • graie = to make, to prepare, to create
  • bûchi = to break

iterative aspect:
putting r'/èr as a prefix on any verb in Jèrriais conveys the idea of a repetition of the action.

On the new historical interpretation sign in the Millennium Town park, there's reference to the legends of the bélengi (will o' the wisp) and the blianche danme (ghost) (Gas Place in Jèrriais is La Rue à la Blianche Danme). Opinion varies as to whether marsh gas in the locality was at the origin of the legendary apparitions (the marshy meadow was Lé Pré des Leunmiéthes - the water-meadow of the lights - hence the modern streetname of L'Avenue et Dolmen du Pré des Lumières).

Sarleinsbach Pfarrkirche - Sprinzenstein-Epitaph 2aJohn Cennick (1718-1755) êcrivit un cantique en Angliais "Lo! He cometh". Chu cantique fut r'publié et amendé par Charles Wesley (1707-1788) épis par Martin Madan (1725-1790), et v'là tchi 'tait ofûche eune bouonne chose viyant qu'lé cantique à Cennick quémenchait ainchîn: "Lo! He cometh, countless Trumpets/Blow before his bloody Sign!". La vèrsion amendée d'C. Wesley est connue achteu coumme "Lo! He comes with clouds descending".

"Hymnes à l'usage de l'église pour le service divin" was a hymnbook published by the SPCK for the use of Francophone congregations. It was compiled by local SPCK branches in Guernsey and Jersey and besides including hymns from French hymnbooks also included new translations into French from "Hymns Ancient and Modern", hymns by Rev. Clément Le Hardy, former rector of Saint Peter, Jersey, and original hymns and translations by Rev. J. Giraud, rector of Saint Saviour, Guernsey. Here's a Jèrriais translation of Giraud's "Voici, porté sur la nue", which was a French translation of Charles Wesley's and Martin Madan's "Lo! êloper, v. Shake the tops or stems of potatoes and place the tubers in rows. One can also say êtèrrer. It's the father who digs up, the lad who shakes and the mother who collects. As the term does not appear to apply to any crop other than potatoes, one wonders if it derives from lopîn. (heap, pile) The fork would have originally unearthed them and deposited them in a lopîn.

Bien parler français au Québec

Jean Provencher a bliodgi Bien parler français au Québec:

Dgiamant - Diamond

AEW diamond solo whiteAn interesting post about pronunciation of diamond in English over at Professor John Wells's phonetics blog:
I am struck by the number of commentators on British television whom I’ve noticed pronouncing diamond as ˈdaɪmənd rather than ˈdaɪəmənd (or the smoothed variants of the latter ˈdaəmənd, ˈdaːmənd).
Naturally enough, those of us with a Jersey accent in English pronounce diamond as daːmənd, so it has two syllables, like dgiamant in Jèrriais (the modernised spelling could just as well be dgamant - the i being a mere sign of the palatalised dg)

We know that the pronunciation of dgiamant has historically been disyllabic. The following alexandrine from a C19th poem demonstrates this (and aren't we glad we never standardised spelling around gu for palatalised dg?):

Êden et Majesté – Eden and Majesty

Liu au sèrvice à l'Églyise Pârouaîssiale dé Saint Hélyi à matîn:
Read at this morning's service at the Town Church:

Êden et Majesté – Eden and Majesty

Ezekiel, 28: 12-14
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Les dgiamants dans l'gardîn, et d'la glouaithe à la gliaine;

No palaces in Eden set, nor high thrones seen;
but still the cherubs chirp above: "God save the Queen!"

Dark onyx coverings and crowns of emerald green
prophesy perfectness and pearls: "God save the Queen!"

And sapphires flame in shade, as lilies lace between
the sceptred stalks and gold-orbed fruit: "God save the Queen!"

R'viyons l'êgalueûthie des jouéyaux qu'Dgieu parfène;

Jersey's Jubilee £100 Note Launched

It's been commissioned to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The security thread that runs through it means that designers are confident that it can't be forged.

The note was launched at a special ceremony last night. Children from First Tower Primary School were there and they sung a poem in Jerrais that was specially written for the occasion.
