Ieau d'cannelle


At Saturday afternoon's Jèrriais tea entertainment at Saint Saviour's Parish Hall, a question was asked about ieau d'cannelle. Murmurs went round the hall - some of puzzlement, some of remembrance.

Here's a recipe for ieau d'cannelle - basically an alcoholic decoction of cinnamon. It was traditionally served at christenings and also at vîsites dé couoches (when friends, family and neighbours would gather to welcome a new-born and see how the mother was doing).

"A qu'menchi, une femme n'allait pas à un hôpita pour aver san mousse. I' 'tait né dans la bouonne chambre, et si l'docteu arrivait un mio tard, nou s'en pâssait. Epis i' n'y avait pas de chais grandes réceptions à tchique hôtel. Après une sémaine ou deux tchiques pathens et amins v'naient féliciter la méthe et nou lûs donnait de l'ieau d'canelle. Les vielles-filles surtout aimaient l'ieau d'canelle, et pûs d'une fais, j'en ai veu tchi n'marchaient pas trop drait en lûs en r'allant siez-yeux."
