Winnipeg Channel Islanders' Society 1914

Dans l'Morning News du 2/2/1914:

Winnipeg Channel Islanders' Society
In celebration of its third anniversary and 133rd anniversary of the Battle of Jersey, the members of the above Society held a most successful banquet at the Royal Albert Hotel, in this City, on Tuesday, January 6th.

A large attendance and a jovial spirit combined to make the gathering a great success, and there was not a dull moment throughout the whole evening. The speeches aroused the utmost enthusiasm, the songs were stirring and the large gathering needed no inducement to join in the rousing choruses of "Beautiful Jersey," "Here we grow the Cabbages," etc., they simply could not have helped it if they had wished to....

Bouonne fête à nos anmîns Français!

Here's today's previously unpublished poem by our author of the month, Geraint Jennings:

La vouaix dgêpe et juque sus l'êtente du chant;
eune lamentâtion d'mouossons et mîngnonnes;

La lamentâtion s'craînche dans la chant'tie;
eune plieunme fliotte en l'air coumme ou vole, la vouaix;
I' vente et chante; nou-s'y ouait l'couorlieu d'Mai.

Acouo du ji auve lé Jèrriais - Have More Fun with Jèrriais

Acouo du ji auve lé Jèrriais
Have More Fun with Jèrriais

If you ever wondered where our road names, place names and surnames come from, then now is the time to find out. For the month of July, L’Office du Jèrriais are inviting Islanders to drop in and enjoy a series of four, free lunchtime sessions to discover more about our Island home and its fascinating language Jèrriais. They take place every Wednesday throughout the month in the Jersey Library at 1pm, and run for 45 minutes.

Jèrriais is Jersey’s unique language. For generations, Jersey people have used it to exchange poetry, stories, scandals and beliefs. It is a language of lullabies and laughs, mockery and swearwords. Using and protecting this great language helps us understand all the special and unique things about our island home.

We are really excited to be introducing these fun, drop-in sessions. Themed around the cardinal points of North, South, East and West they will give everyone a basic understanding about both our Island and our fascinating and fun Jèrriais language. They are perfect for all; whether you have recently moved to Jersey or have lived here for longer.”

The sessions will be hosted by Geraint Jennings and run on Wednesday 8th, 15th, 22ndand 29th July at 1pm in the Jersey Library, Halkett Place. There is no need to register, just bring your lunch and drop in for a 45 minute shot of Island inspiration whilst you eat.

Sonnet 98 dé Shakespeare
J'ai 'té liain d'té, à banon au R'nouvé,
quand Avri, l'fyi et pielé, rajannit
atout l'esprit d'jannèche, tout attînfé,
et chu b'sant Saturne jopîntait auve li.
ni louangi dans la rose san sang d'rouogeu;
i' 'taient raîque doux - sans r'êmoûtchi lé d'si
qué té, tu'êmoûque - coumme l'èrfliet d'un mitheux.
Mais, acouo liain d'té, j'sis à hiv'nagi:
à jouarder atout ches ombres dé tan ji.

Tom Girard has blogged "Sark Folk Festival: 3rd, 4th and 5th July 2015 – Extended Review":

Upon first hearing about what Badlabecques do I will admit to being skeptical (...)

I am very happy to report though, I was proven wrong as the band played a selection of jaunty, fun tunes and songs (...)

Not' Danme des Pas
Ou dansicotte en touônnitchet;

Here's today's previously unpublished poem by our author of the month, Geraint Jennings:

Janvyi

souos l'êdrédon du d'so d'nos présents dêpatchis

Here's today's previously unpublished poem by our author of the month, Geraint Jennings:

Lé vent tchi sangne
L'long du talustre, i' soûffl'ye coumme un bal'not;
les huthes du r'sîn r'sourdent et r'sonnent dans la baie;
en longues halenées. Nou cope au vif d'un trait;

et l'vent coutèle. Des rouoges taques sus l'papi
sont êtampées sanglieusement du pônchet.
La tèrre et la mé sont taqu'tées dé gris;

I' vente dû à chaûmêtchi les batchieaux;

Here's today's previously unpublished poem by our author of the month, Geraint Jennings:

Quand, la niet, tu n'es d'aut' acanté mé,
jé d'vise ches véthités à m'n ouothilyi;

Tu m'vîns en jaune; en rouoge jé t'vis assise;
