Ronde

Ronde
Nou n'entend pus la cadence
des danseurs sus les plianchais;
Nou n'entend pus la cadence
des batteurs atout lus fliais.

Au lieu d'la vielle routinne
au fliais dé batt' san grain,
nou sé sèrt d'eune machinne
tchi n'fait qué dé l'êtrain.

Nou n'vait pus dé fouôthies
comme nou faîthait dans man temps
Nou n'entend pus ès sciêthies
r'corder touos l's anciens chants.

Nou n'feût pus qu'ès fouoyéthes,
la grand tchéthue touônne tout;
Par la nouvelle manniéthe
lé grain s'havoque l'avoût.

Nou n'sé sèrt pus d'froutchette
pouor sèrclyi dans les pânnais,
Mais nou fait sèrvi la houette
pouor raves, cârotte, et navets.

Nou n's'assied pus à la veil'ye,
les longues séthées d'hivé;
La journée d'la sèrvelle,
tch'est qu'a l'air d'lé saver?

Nou pâle dé tempéthance,
nou prétend êt' èrligieurs;

English translation:

Round dance
One no longer hears the cadence
of dancers on the floors;
One no longer hears the cadence
of threshers with their flails.

Instead of the old routine
of threshing one's grain with a flail
one uses a machine
which makes nothing but straw/chaff/trivialities .

One no longer sees digging parties
like one had in my day
One no longer hears at reaping parties
all the ancient songs being bound up again/well ploughed.

One only digs now on the headlands (turning borders of ploughed fields),
the big plough ploughs everything,
by the new method
the grain is ill-reaped at harvest.

One no longer uses the fork
to weed among the parsnips,
but one uses the hoe
for beets, carrot and turnips.

One no longer sits down for social gatherings at night
in the the long Winter evenings;
The day of the long watch,
who seems to know of it?

One speaks of temperance,
one claims to be religious;
One no longer sings any more than one dances,
but we're no better for that.

Seeing how people/the world
don't know on which foot to dance/where to turn/what they're doing
one doubts if the Earth is round/honest
if it's true that it can turn/plough.
