Jèrriais at Cambridge

Jèrriais is an integral part of the course at Peterhouse on the French Language: Variation and Change. In their final year, Cambridge University students study the dialectal divisions of France, including Jersey, Guernsey and Sark.

Dr. Mari Jones presents information on the different vocabulary in Eastern and Western Jèrriais and the accents which are (or were) used in the linguistic pockets around the Island. One lecture compares the numbers and percentages able to use the different forms of Norman. Mainland Normandy has around 17,000 Norman speakers - about 1% of the population, Jersey has 2,874 or 3.2%, Guernsey with 1,327 speakers making up 2.2% and Sark has an estimated 10 speakers (1.7%)- and Alderney has none...

Students are also given information about the special features of the Norman language, with an emphasis on the Islands. They also examine Language policy and Planning, comparing programmes supporting Seselwa, the first official language of the Seychelles, with the States of Jersey's support of Jèrriais, Jersey's official minority language.

Vendrédi au sé, L'Assembliée d'Jèrriais eut eune séthée d'bîngo à la Salle Pârouaîssiale dé La Trinn'té. Lé Président, l'Sieur Winston Le Brun, criait les neunméthos. Coumme dé couôteunme, y'eut des pliaintes des cheins tchi dithent huiptante, car l'Sieur Le Brun n'fait pon sèrvi chu mot-là. The February 2011 issue of the Saint Helier Parish magazine has an article in Jèrriais full of wordplay on hearts and cherries and crowds, as well as an explanation that "pouquelaye" is a Jèrriais word for dolmen.

Mother languages are special in providing the material with which the world is first voiced, the lens through which it is first understood. International Mother Language Day is a moment to recognize their importance and to mobilise for multilingualism and linguistic diversity.

Lé Cliâme dé Hâro - Clameur de Haro

The recent post on coutumiers reminded us of the poem on the coutume of Jersey in an article (with introduction by Advocate Richard Falle) in the October 2000 issue of the Jersey Law Review (now the Jersey and Guernsey Law Review)

The poem, a sort of attempt at a coutumier in verse, was basically written in French, but some Jèrriais forms appear. One example is in the section on the Clameur de Haro, where French clameur and Jèrriais cliâme appear as required by the demands of the verse.

1649: Vive lé Rouai! - Long live the King!

We're exchanging cards with the Pays Gallo (the traditionally Gallo-speaking area of Brittany). Students in Jèrriais classes have made some cards to send back - and it so happens that, with Valentine's Day falling as it does, the theme is reflected in some of the designs and messages.

Usufruitchièrs - Usufructuaries

We are not a lawyer, but we had a call this afternoon about "life enjoyment". L'Office du Jèrriais is not a legal advice service, but people occasionally get confused by the term "Jersey French" and turn to us for help. Interestingly, just like Jèrriais, the French language is perfectly able to distinguish between the Jersey language - le jersiais - and the Jersey dialect of French - le français de Jersey - but the English language, lacking an adjective for Jersey, gets itself in a twist about such straightforward matters. This is why it's much simpler all round to call the Jersey language by its vernacular name - Jèrriais - and refer to the Jersey dialect of French as used in contracts and laws as Jersey Legal French.

Authors and dates

One of the consequences of a literary culture that values self-effacement is that sometimes the biographical details of authors can be overlooked or even lost. Many of our well-regarded writers have hidden behind noms de plume for one reason or another, but this has helped render them more anonymous to a later readership. Part of the process of celebrating our rich literary heritage has been to bring the personalities of Jèrriais writers out of the shadows, and, as with so much, the digital revolution is transforming our knowledge of the past.
