Thursday 14 April: In yesterday evening's JEP there was a report (with picture) Under the Clock on the latest issue of Les Nouvelles Chroniques du Don Balleine, specifically on the historically-themed sudoku puzzle. The clues as quoted would be more puzzling than in the magazine as one of the dates got slightly scrambled - of course, it's 1649 that's the significant date in Jersey history, rather than 1694!

Turnips and paparazzi

An interesting Languagehat blogpost, commenting on how borrowings may be reanalyzed, brings to mind a comparable situation in Jèrriais. Much in the same way as the English language has borrowed some plural words which English speakers have reanalyzed as singular (for example: a panini, an agenda, a paparazzi), or created a singular such as, for example, an asset, Jèrriais has some borrowed English plurals reanalyzed as singulars.

In the library today we bumped into the well-known actor John Nettles, who's continuing his researches into the Occupation. As we were asked about the rôle played by Jèrriais in the Occupation as a form of linguistic resistance, we were able to pull out the relevant pages in "The Toad and the Donkey" for him, as well as mention the republished texts in Les Nouvelles Chroniques du Don Balleine as a start.
