While Owen wrote powerful poetry, he was just one of 2,225 men and women from Britain and Ireland who had poems published during World War One. (...)

Among these were our Jèrriais poets EJ Luce and Jean Picot. We don't tend to think of them as war poets, but they certainly expressed in poetry some of the wartime experiences of the Jersey population and some of the experiences of the home front. Here are some snippets:

Un soudard en kharki s'en v'nait
Amont la rue bouan rond
Et, slindgi sus san dos, portait
San sa' tout plien, comme nou l'viyait.

L's Allemands ont fait, siez nos vaisins,
Y'où qu'i' passaient, un tas d'minzéthe,
Mais dans tchi tripot que j'soummes mins
Nous, d'vant qu'i' s'saient à la Corbiéthe!

Qu'les grounneurs apprennent à souorithe,
Que les pliercheurs erbrachent lus manches;
Qu'les mauvaises langues tchittent à médithe,
Et qu'à la dgherre, nos hoummes avanchent
En Mil-neu'-chent-djiex-huit!

N'en v'la don, Kaiser, des nouvelles
A t'faithe allouagni toute la fache!
Eche occouo du bord des êtelles,
Qu'ou'pointe, ta fameuse grand' moustache?

L'autre jour, les Pulentchièrs d'mandaient en vain
D'être exemptès du service militaithe,
A cause du vraic qui taillent ou pêquent au pliain

"Ou z'avèz souvent lu," i' lus dîsait, "sus la Gazette,
"Entouôre lé saccage qué j'faîsons ov la baïonnette,
"Eh bein, unn' nièt, qué jamais jé n'oublyierai
"Unn' nièt qué nou n'viyiait pon la main dévant sai,
"Jé tchîmes sus l'dos ès Boches sans tirer un coup,
"Et ch'tait pique ichin, pique là, et pique partout!

Un janne récru' ov ses vilaines morgaches dans les rangs,
Faisait raide mârri yieun des vièrs Sergents,
Tchi vos là rouâblyi conséquemment
Pour être à trébutchi l'alignément;
