British-Irish Council: Indigenous, Minority and Lesser-used Languages

Ms Ní Chuilín (Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure): Go raibh maith agat, a Cheann Comhairle. Thank you, Mr Speaker. With your permission, in compliance with section 52 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, I wish to make the following report on the second British-Irish Council (BIC) ministerial meeting on indigenous, minority and lesser-used languages.(...)

I attended the meeting in Gweedore, County Donegal, on 11 November 2011. I represented the Executive as Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, along with Jonathan Bell MLA, junior Minister in the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister. The Irish Government were represented by Dinny McGinley TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for Gaeltacht affairs; the Scottish Government were represented by Alasdair Allan MSP, Minister for Learning and Skills; Guernsey was represented by Deputy Michael O’Hara, Minister of the Department of Culture and Leisure; Jersey by Mario Lundy, the director of education;

At last week's 60th anniversary celebrations of L'Assembliée d'Jèrriais, Audrey Lucas read"Tchi Temps!" (what weather!), a poem by Fraînque Le Maistre who was a founder member of L'Assembliée and editor of the Bulletîn d'Quart d'An for many years.

Here is a list of the words and phrases we covered in this week's little Jèrriais lesson on BBC Jersey (Monday 2.30pm). We looked at some words and placenames with a w sound (written ou):

• Saint Ouën = Saint Ouen
• Saint Louothains = Saint Lawrence
• La Crouaix d'Bouais = Five Oaks
• Lé Bouôlé = Bouley
• Lé Bel Rouoya = Bel Royal (the royal yard)
• Ouaisné = (probably means a killick, or improvised anchorage)
• ouothelle = ear
• ouadgîn = lorry
• où'est qu'...? = where...?
• où'est qu'est...? = where is...?
• où'est qu'tu d'meuthe? = where do you live?
