"This talk will show how Jèrriais writing can provide a fascinating window into the vibrant history of Jersey society. It will examine the work and careers of three of the island’s most significant Jèrriais writers from the period: Edwin John Luce, Phillippe Le Sueur Mourant, and George William de Carteret, better known by their pen names as Elie, Bram Bilo, and Lé Caouain. Through the lens of their contributions to the island’s newspapers in this period, it will discuss both the role of the press in Jersey society and the popularity and importance of Jèrriais literature. It will show how Le Sueur Mourant made thousands of Jersey people laugh, how Luce brought Jèrriais theatre and song to the stage in the First World War, and how De Carteret used the language to keep his readers up to date with the latest gossip from parish politics."
