"the effects of bilingualism are surprisingly far-reaching"

Julie Sedivy êcrit Leave Los Niños Alone! The Mental Costs of Linguistic Assimilation:
When asked to draw a picture of a flower that does not exist, monolingual children were fairly unadventurous, drawing perhaps a flower that was missing its leaves, or a flower with only one petal. Bilingual children, on the other hand, incorporated elements from completely different objects—producing for instance, a flower with a tail, or a flower with teeth. This kind of cross-category mixing in children’s drawings tends not to occur until kids are about eight years old, putting the bilingual kids on an accelerated timeline for this particular skill.

Assez savant et habille;
Pour finir s'n éducation

J'en vis iun à barbe grise
Qui sans doute se crait bein grand,
Et qui pour que nouz en d'vise
Va s'promner hors de san banc.

"The loss of the Scots language would be a cultural catastrophe"

Michael Hance, directeu du Scots Language Centre, êcrit dans l'Scottish Review:
The claim that a language which requires support is a language that is beyond saving is one which is often made but rarely critically examined. The argument fails to take into account the support which 'national' languages like English receive at the taxpayers' expense through broadcasting, education and the various institutions of the state. It is precisely because Scots does not and did not receive these indirect forms of support that it is being lost at such speed. To stand by and sneer while this cultural catastrophe continues is not in my view a reasonable response.

Here is a list of the phrases we covered in this week's little Jèrriais lesson on BBC Jersey (Monday after 6pm). The circumflex accent (the one that looks like a pointed hat) over a vowel indicates that the sound is long. This sometimes distinguishes the meaning of words that look otherwise identical. As a comparison, think of the way a "magic e" at the end of English words shows different pronunciations e.g. rat - rate.

Victoria Marine Lake - 1897

From a report of the opening of the Victoria Marine Lake in Saint Helier in 1897:

(Hear! hear!)...

Language Endangerment: Methodologies and New Challenges

CRASSH annonche:

At a time when UNESCO deems 43% of the world's 6,000 languages at risk of extinction, the imperative to record and analyse these linguistic varieties while they are still spoken has scarcely been greater. Yet researchers have ostensibly been slow to avail themselves of the opportunities offered by new techologies, from visual and aural archiving, to digitisation of textual resources and electronic mapping, techniques which could have the potential to play an integral role in reversing language shift. However, it is clear that with these new technologies come new challenges for the linguist. The Second Cambridge Language Endangerment Conference invites researchers to bring forward their ideas for tackling these issues: to share experiences from the field, to consider how these new resources might best be applied, as well as the problems that they can bring, to reassess more traditional techniques in light of new technologies and to work with a view towards achieving a practicable synthesis of old and new methodologies.

This chapter offers a discussion on the interconnection between Jèrriais and song (more specifically folksong using Jèrriais). It shows that song can act as a powerful medium in language revitalization, and that as an island Jersey has much to offer in terms of showing how language and song provide a means of celebrating and creating island culture.

Né v'là l'mais d'Dézembre bein pâssé;
j'fêtons acouo au mais d'Janvyi.
L'an r'est nouvé - not' Noué r'est vyi.

Né v'chîn l'Vièr Noué, né v'chîn l'Vièr Noué:
not' deuxième fête d'un long Hivé.
L'an r'est nouvé - not' Noué r'est vyi.

Ma Modgie d'Cidre - Little Brown Jug

Faîs'sie d'Cidre 2009 57Dans sa Lettre du Bouanhomme George du 10 d'Août 1974, George F. Lé Feuvre donnit eune difféthente vèrsion d'Ma Modgie d'Cidre qu'chette-là. I' dit étout qu'la vèrsion Jèrriaise fut composée par EJ Luce "y'a dêjà bein d's années..."

Here's a different version of Little Brown Jug in Jèrriais (more verses and some different wording) to the one we're more used to singing. According to George d'La Forge, it was written by Elie.

Ma Modgie d'Cidre
Ma femme et mé j'd'meuthons touos seurs
Dans eune maiethon parmi les flieurs;
Je bai du cidre et lyi du thée
Et j'sommes tréjous heutheurs et dgais.

Èrfrain
Ha! ha! ha! - ma modgie d'cidre,
I' m'en faut un p'tit lèrmîn!
Ha! ha! ha! - ma modgie d'cidre,
Vite acouothe un p'tit gouttîn.

Lé matîn d'vant man dêjeuner,
Jé file tout drait dans man preinseu;

D'th exthempl'yes - Examples of Saint Ouënnais

IPA 131Browsing some articles written with very distinctive Saint Ouënnais dialectal features, we decided to make a little list. The dictionaries don't cite all these forms with a ð, and the liaisons in ð don't seem to be well described (note also the general lengthening of the vowel before ð). So get your tongues between your teeth and prepare to sound like a Gris Ventre!

Indigenous Tweets: 1000 Languages on the Web

Indigenous Tweets: 1000 Languages on the Web:
Since 2003 I've been gathering texts from the web written in indigenous and minority languages. The image above is a "family tree" of the 1000 languages I've found to date, where proximity in the tree is measured by a straightforward statistical comparison of writing systems...

I'm using these data in collaboration with language groups all around the world to develop basic resources that help people use their language online: keyboard input methods, spell checkers, online dictionaries, and so on. This work also underlies the Indigenous Tweets and Indigenous Blogs projects, which aim to strengthen languages through social media.

The State of Zapotec Poetry: Can Poetry Save an Endangered Culture?

The State of Zapotec Poetry: Can Poetry Save an Endangered Culture?
Contemporary poets often give readings nationally and abroad and have attracted followers to the cause of Zapotec culture with their mesmerizing verses. Natalia Toledo (b. 1967), a poet who also designs clothing and jewelry, has traveled the world to read poetry in her native tongue. She commented that when she reads her verses in Vietnam, Italy, or the United States people are enchanted, even if they don't understand the words. It is the sound itself that entrances.

Qu'i n'verront pas l'lendemain!
