Thank you to all those who attended last month’s meeting so soon after the New Year but we forged ahead with the selection, cataloguing and indexing of the literature records and re-elected and confirmed the Section’s Officers as those below.

Moves have already been made for La Fête Nouormande to be held in Jersey this year, so watch this space.

Our compositions for Les Nouvelles Chroniques this quarter are on the subject of History… an event, a story, turning point(s) or long term effects…which contribute to your own or our national/ethnic memory. When asked why should we study this subject, a Canadian History professor once replied with ‘have you ever seen anyone who has lost their memory?’ Closing date Feb. 14th.

We were again asked to clarify the use of the following …..Jersey, Jersiais and Jersiaise….. and Jèrri, Jèrriais and Jèrriaise, primarily for La Société and the Section.

1846: Punch - "Remote Notions of Royalty"

Jester kicking the world (Punch, volume 1, 1841)Lé magâsîn "Punch" rapportit entouor la vîsite d'la Reine Victoria, not' Duc, en 1846:
"Punch" magazine reported on the Royal visit to Jersey in 1846:
On the occasion of Her Majesty's visit to Jersey, several of the poor people, who had never seen a live Queen before, openly expressed their disappointment. They had expected to see Her Majesty arrive in her coronation robes, with the sceptre in one hand and the ball in the other, just as they had always seen her represented in the engravings....

We heard one of the natives, pointing to the Royal flunky, say with great glee, "Oi chou la his weeskers a pour voyoi oukaree boy kroikoi!" No one could tell us what the above meant; and as there is no dictionary of the Jersey language published, we are sorry we cannot translate it for the benefit of our readers. It must have been very funny, for all the by-standers laughed at it immensely ; so we give it as a specimen of a joke in the Channel Islands. It was the only one we heard during a week's sojourn.

Members of L'Assembliée d'Jèrriais made a continental trip in August 1964 and visited the Abbey of La Lucerne where a Norman language service was held. Were the translations of the psalms and gospel reading ever published? Or is this newspaper report the only trace left of them?

George d'La Forge visited Pompeii in 1963. Here's a description he wrote, dated 17 July 1964:

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

April Meservy

Nikki Forova and April MeservyApril Meservy is an American musician of Jersey ancestry.

She explains, at Linescratchers, how Jèrriais inspired some branding:

What is the nature of your independent label, Forêt d’Musique? Do any other musicians use this label?
A: It’s an independent label that I created to host my own albums as well as other artists I produce. I have been starting to produce artists of different styles – from pop/rock to indie eclectic to light classical. Forêt d’Musique means Forest of Music in Jèrriais (an ancestral language of my family). I chose that title because I wanted it to be a label to represent music of all kinds. In a forest there are many different kinds of trees and plants – that’s what makes it beautiful. I feel it’s the same with music. Different songs and styles even speak to us in different ways and that’s what makes life rich and beautiful. No one style can represent the entirety of our experiences in life and the emotions we feel. I believe in celebrating that. My label intends to support and promote artists of different kinds.

Chambre des États - States ChamberLearning Jèrriais supports French and citizenship: a little anecdote recounted to us this morning in a primary school.

Schoolchildren in Jersey visit the States Chamber, as part of the citizenship programme ensuring they have enough knowledge and awareness to participate in the community, its institutions, laws and government. Students from this primary school in question had visited the States Chamber and rôle-played a mock debate - various students played parts of States Members. One boy was chosen to play the rôle of the Dean of Jersey and to read the customary prayer in French at the start of the session. He was chosen because his participation in Jèrriais class had given him the extra language skills and confidence to be able to read the French prayer. Jèrriais - life enriching!

From the Viking word-hoard - A dictionary of Scandinavian words in the languages of Britain and Ireland

Battle of Flowers 2007 Jersey Optimists VikingsFrom the Viking word-hoard - A dictionary of Scandinavian words in the languages of Britain and Ireland by Diarmaid Ó Muirithe, former professor of literature at University College Dublin, and author of the Words We Use column in the Irish Times.
At the beginning of the 9th century the growing population of the three great branches of the Scandinavian race who people the countries abutting the Baltic – the Norsemen or Northmen, the Swedes and Danes – began a great outward movement which was caused both by political changes and their enterprising nature. Thus the 9th century came to be known as the Age of the Vikings, Víkinga-Öld.

The Danish emigration directed its course to the north-east of England. The second migration was Norse, whose settlers gradually peopled the coasts of Ireland, northern Scotland and the Isle of Man. They left a lasting linguistic heritage. This book is a glossary of words in the various languages of Britain and Ireland which owe their origin to the intrepid raiders and merchants of Scandinavia.
Although this book is interesting and very useful up to a point, one of its flaws is that the author has interpreted "the various languages of Britain and Ireland which owe their origin to the intrepid raiders and merchants of Scandinavia" to exclude the Norman languages of the Channel Islands. This reduces its usefulness for reference to common Norse roots and requires cross-referencing with other works (such as Jean Renaud's Les Vikings et les patois de Normandie et des Iles Anglo-Normandes) to understand the relationships between the languages of the British Isles. There is a lack of logic in the inclusion of the Isle of Man within the book's stated scope of "Britain and Ireland" but the exclusion of Jersey and the other Islands. The introduction also glosses over the influence of Norman and its Norse elements following the Conquest(s).

There is at least one mention of the Channel Islands in the book. The entry for "mug" refers to "Normandy dialectal moque and the Guersney mogue". The misspelling of Guernsey is symptomatic of the sporadic errors marring the book - and the omission of Jèrriais also rather undermines one's confidence in the book.

That said, with all its limitations, this book fills a gap and is eminently dippable into. Here are a few examples (with Jèrriais cognates that don't appear in this dictionary, for comparison):
  • graith, greth: Scots, Northen Irish English, Northern, Middle and South-West English - accoutrements; a horse's harness (cf. Jèrriais: graie)
  • grunda: Medieval Irish - ground (cf. Jèrriais: greune)
  • grunnd: Scottish Gaelic - ground (cf. Jèrriais: greune)
  • hag: Middle English, Scots, Northern Irish English, Northern, Midland and Southern English - to cut with an axe, to hew, chop (cf. Jèrriais: hadgi)
  • haggard, haggart: Scots, Irish English, Southern English, Isle of Man English - a stack yard (cf. Jèrriais: haûgard)
  • half, haave: Scots - a bag-shaped net (cf. Jèrriais: have)
  • hoeg: Shetlandic and Orcadian - a tumulus (cf. Jèrriais: hougue)
  • how, howe: Scots, Northern English - a hill (cf. Jèrriais: hougue)
  • howm: Shetlandic and Orcadian - a strip of low-lying land beside a river (cf. Jèrriais: hoummet)
  • maw: Northern Scots, Orcadian, Shetlandic, Northern Irish English - seagull (cf. Jèrriais: mauve)
  • meal: Northern and Midland English, East Anglian - a sand bank (cf. Jèrriais: mielle)
  • naam: the action of taking another's goods by way of distraint (cf. Jèrriais: naûmier)
  • paut: Scots, Northern English, Lincolnshire English, East Anglian - to poke or push with the hand or a stick; to paw, handle or finger things (cf. Jèrriais: paûtchi, paûtrîndgi)
  • pòca: Scottish Gaelic - a pocket, pouch (cf. Jèrriais: pouque)
  • rúm: Medieval and Modern Irish - a room; an area or space (cf. Jèrriais: run)
  • scrae: Shetlandic, Orcadian, Northern Irish English - dried fish (cf. Jèrriais: êcrède)
  • skruith: Orcadian - a shoal of fish (cf. Jèrriais: êcrède)

Une immense phalène. - Vendredi dernier M. Ph.

A brief note for all those taking part in our Jèrriais evening classes that they will re-start for the Spring term on Wednesday 19th January and run till 31st March.

Wednesdays 5.45 Colin Ireson's Beginners
Wednesdays 6.00 Tony Scott Warren's Intermediates
Thursdays 7.00 Colin Ireson's Conversational

Another short note to add - following last November's success at L'Eisteddfod d'Jèrri à St. Ouen, BBC Radio Jèrri have offered to record the short pièche dé thiâtre and broadcast it, probably as excerpts, in the coming weeks, dates to be confirmed. The pièche dé thiâtre was presented by members of the Thursday Conversational Evening class and was written by Joan Tapley. The broadcast might also include interviews with class members about their love for the language and their concerns about its preservation and promotion. A great "first" for us!

La Batâle dé Jèrri - Battle of Jersey

Battle of Jersey commemoration 2011 36On Saturday at the commemoration of the Battle of Jersey at the Parish Hall in Saint Helier, a brief entertainment provided selections of poetry and song in Jèrriais, French and English, inspired by the Battle of Jersey. Many in the audience were unfamiliar with the texts and there were questions as to where to find the poems and songs.

Historic Jèrriais texts on the Battle of Jersey can generally be found on the Pages Jèrriaises, and some here on previous postings on the blog.

Poetry in English and French - as well as the Chanson de Peirson - can be found transcribed on the poetry pages here (and the lists of poetry in newspapers enable more texts to be found by title and date).

The Chanson de Peirson has been arranged by Jon Lord and performed by Jersey Premier Brass. The traditional song has been recorded and can be found (under the title "L'invasion de Jersey") on the CD "Chants des Marins Bretons".

La Prise de Saint-Hélier is available on CD:

Language - a great asset

According to his obituary in the Times (7 January 2011), Sir Iain Noble, founder of the Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye, believed that having a separate language was "a great asset to the development of any community." He thought that Gaelic was as important to be heard in the boardroom as at the peat-fire and insisted on having Gaelic-speaking employees. The cultural activities which he encouraged are estimated to bring over £1 million per year to the community on the Isle of Skye.

L'Vièr Noué - Old Christmas Day

(...)

More from George d'la Forge writing about the Battle of Jersey. This time, the letter was composed and published in January 1969:

"Nouos r'vélà au jour dé l'annivèrsaithe" - The anniversary comes round again

John Singleton Copley 001George d'La Forge êcrivit eune lettre lé six d'Janvyi 1973:
George d'La Forge wrote a letter on the sixth of January 1973:

The Parish of Saint Helier is fundraising for a monument to the Battle of Jersey/a Peirson statue: Peirson Sculpture Appeal. For a century and a half attempts have been made to get a statue erected. In 1980, the year before the bicentenary of the Battle of Jersey, George d'La Forge had proposals of his own:

Naturally enough, Major Peirson and the Battle of Jersey have inspired Jersey poets:

Qui s'étais ben trompaits en v'nans nos attaqui;

I fut r'chu à s'n-arrivèe,
Car il ieut du feu saqui
D'vant qu'l'affaithe fut finie;
Ch'était là dans l'Vièr-marchi
Que Pierson perdit sa vie.

Ch'n'est pon que je m'en r'souveins,
J'l'ai oui conter à men pèthe:
Car il eut un divèrs train;
Ch'tait quthieux dans ouir l'histouethe.
J'en ai accouo un fusi
Qui fut prins à la bataille.
Et, ma fei, j'en ai d'l'orgui,
Quoeque ach'teu ch'seit rein-qui-vaille.

I r'couvre ben des chendres...

Not' vier fusi

Et malgré tout chonna j'y tcheins:
Man grand-grand-père l'prit des mains
De iun de ches soudards Français
Tchi voulur'nt battre les Jerriais
Dans chu bein memorablle jour
Quand i' vinr'nt ichin ov' Rull' court.

Vère, tréjous le six d' Janvii,
Tu m'rappell'ras, o vier fusi;
Tu m'rappell'ras aïtout Pierson
Que jamais nou n'oubliera pon,
Li tchi en combattant mouorrit
Pour saufgardai not' p'tit Jerri.

Unne Compieinte

La belle statue, dé tchi ou vos vantais tant;
Chest ben honteus qué dans not' île y n'y a
Coumme not héros se' trouvi -
Y fit ben sen dévé, et y sauvit Jerri.

Not'e P'tit Pays

Q'not'e p'tit pays dé fruit èt d'f'yieurs.
I'l'y'en a, bouanes gens, dé pièthes ailleurs
J'sommes tous, j'sis seux bein orgiyieurs
Dé vais ichin not'e vieille couleur

In Peirson's Days:
After the service, most of the congregation repaired to their beloved "Vier Marchi," and here the battle was fought over again. Listen to one stout militiaman who, with head erect and the air of a conqueror, is relating to "la buonne femme," and an admiring crowd, what he did on that memorable day. His recital is received with cries of "Brav' Mait'e Jo ; r'gardez ta buoune femme, ou'lle est bain fiere d'vous.
